After weeks of preparation by residents and staff, on a beautiful sunny day in June, The Maples celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a picnic in our beautiful gardens. As June 3rd approached, our residents became more and more excited as they helped Lynn to decorate the home with collages, mobiles, photographs, flags, and homemade Jubilee shakers.

Carmen took charge of decorating our gardens, Paul hoisted the flags and Marie and Lynn slaved away from the early hours to make our wonderful buffet of sandwiches, pizza, nibbles, pineapple and cheese on sticks, cakes, scones, trifle and much more.

The ‘Queen’ arrived in her royal Range Rover accompanied by her favourite Corgis, twin Grenadier Guards, and her throne! As befitting the occasion, our residents sported a range of Jubilee hats, and once seated and clutching their favourite tipple, we toasted her Majesty and sang ‘God Save the Queen’.

The conversation flowed and the laughter increased as our picnic progressed, culminating in a champagne toast and chocolates.

As the long day of celebration drew to a close, our residents, full of food and possibly a little tipsy, posed for photos with the Queen, sitting on her throne, and then off they went for a well-deserved nap.

The staff were exhausted, but it was so worth it. Covid had robbed us of days like this but now we were back. A wonderful day of pure joy. Our residents were so happy they wanted to do it again!

Happy Platinum Jubilee your Majesty from the residents and staff of The Maples.
